Establishing Academic Collaboration in Vocational Skills for Thai Monks

Abstract

This study aims to achieve three primary objectives: (1) to examine the educational system of the Pariyatti Dhamma schools (general education division) in Thailand, (2) to analyze the labor situation, the condition of temples, and the monastic community in Sa Kaeo Province, and (3) to propose academic collaboration strategies in vocational skills development for Buddhist monks and novices in Thailand.
Findings from the study of the educational system of Pariyatti Dhamma schools (general education division) reveal that these schools play a significant role in enhancing the skills and knowledge of Buddhist monks and novices. However, they face challenges related to the diversity of curricula and a decline in student enrollment, attributed to the decreasing number of young individuals entering monastic ordination.
An analysis of the labor situation, temple conditions, and the monastic community in Sa Kaeo Province indicates that the majority of the population engages in agricultural activities but lacks modern technological knowledge and skills. This limitation prevents local laborers from adding value to their produce or advancing their careers. Additionally, the number of temples and monastics in the region has been consistently declining, leading to a shortage of personnel for managing religious sites and Buddhist activities.
The study on academic collaboration strategies highlights the importance of fostering partnerships between Pariyatti Dhamma schools, technical colleges, and local communities. These partnerships should focus on developing vocational curricula aligned with the needs of Buddhist monks, novices, and local residents. A successful example of such collaboration is the pilot project of a 75-hour electrical installation course conducted at Pajjantaket Wittaya School in Ta Phraya District, which serves as a clear model for integrated academic cooperation.
The findings underscore that vocational skill development not only enhances the capabilities of Buddhist monks and novices but also positions them as key contributors to the development of temples and local communities. This approach addresses educational disparities in rural areas and, when scaled to other regions, can contribute to sustainable economic and social development at the regional level.
