TRANSLATION AND CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION OF THE THAI VERSION OF CHILD PERCEPTIONS QUESTIONNAIRE (CPQ8-10)

Abstract

This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for children aged 8–10 years (CPQ_8-10) into Thai. The process began with forward translation from English to Thai by a pediatric dentistry expert and a linguist. A three-member expert committee specializing in pediatric dentistry, dental public health, and linguistics reviewed the translation and developed the preliminary Thai version (TH1). This version was then back-translated into English by an independent pediatric dentistry expert and linguist with no prior exposure to the original instrument. The committee reviewed all versions to ensure equivalence in semantic, idiomatic, experiential, and conceptual dimensions and modified wording to suit children aged 8–10 years. For example, “oral discomfort” was adapted to “dental problems” to preserve conceptual equivalence (TH2). A pilot study involving 20 children (45% male, 55% female) at Wat Thepakorn School was conducted. Children completed the questionnaire independently while researchers read questions aloud and included an “I do not understand” option. One item concerning “frustration” exceeded the 15% misunderstanding threshold and was revised to “annoyed” for greater clarity. The systematic translation and cultural adaptation process resulted in a linguistically and culturally appropriate Thai version of the CPQ_8-10, ready for subsequent psychometric testing.
