HEALTH TOURISM DYNAMICS IN THE 21ST CENTURY: SHIFTING PARADIGMS, CRISIS RESILIENCE, AND FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY
Abstract
Health tourism has emerged as a rapidly growing and transformative sector in the 21st century, reflecting a paradigm shift from solely "treatment" to "holistic well-being" encompassing prevention and comprehensive health promotion. Prior to COVID-19, this global market, valued at 639 billion USD, experienced significant growth, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Europe, facilitating cross-border access to diverse healthcare options. The pandemic, however, drastically impacted global tourism, resulting in a 74% reduction in international arrivals and substantial revenue losses in 2020, thereby significantly accelerating innovation and adaptation within the health tourism industry. Despite increasing scholarly attention since 2001, critical research gaps persist in standardizing definitions (medical, wellness, spa tourism), exploring long-term health outcomes, fostering interdisciplinary integration between the medical and tourism sectors, and systematically reviewing the profound changes of the COVID-19 era. This article aims to comprehensively analyze the evolution of health tourism concepts, trends, and multi-dimensional impacts across pre-, during, and post-pandemic periods (2001-2025). Utilizing a descriptive documentary research method, it synthesizes key lessons and proposes policy recommendations to foster sustainable and resilient health tourism development, addressing its economic, socio-cultural, environmental, technological, and governance dimensions.
