FACTORS INFLUENCING FEAR OF CRIME AND TRUST IN RURAL AREAS: A CASE STUDY OF BANG KACHAO SUBDISTRICT
Abstract
Fear of crime and public confidence in community safety are significant issues that affect the quality of life, particularly in rural communities where social relationships are closely knit and long-established. Bang Kachao Subdistrict, located in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, is one such community. Often referred to as the “Green Lung of Bangkok,” Bang Kachao has preserved its lush natural environment and traditional way of life despite its proximity to the metropolitan area. As a long-standing community, many residents of Bang Kachao have lived in the area for generations, creating strong social bonds and fostering a sense of social capital. However, ongoing economic, social, and environmental changes, as well as the increasing presence of outsiders, may influence local residents’ perceptions of safety, their fear of crime, and their confidence in both law enforcement and community-based security mechanisms. Therefore, examining the factors influencing fear of crime and trust in community in Bang Kachao Subdistrict is essential. Such a study will shed light on the social dynamics of a rural community undergoing transformation and provide valuable insights for policymakers and local authorities in developing strategies to enhance safety and strengthen public confidence.
