Abstract

This research aimed 1) to study and analyze bead-weaving materials suitable for design applications and
2) to develop guidelines for applying bead-weaving techniques to souvenir designs. It employed a mixed-methods approach by analyzing relevant data and creating prototypes using designated materials to evaluate their appropriateness and weaving techniques. Four materials were tested: thread, silk, nylon, and wire, revealing that each type of warp and weft combination offered distinct advantages and limitations. The four most suitable techniques were identified as silk warp with nylon weft, nylon warp with nylon weft, silk warp with silk weft, and nylon warp with silk weft. Each technique demonstrated different properties in terms of strength, durability, and aesthetics. For design guidelines, geometric forms served as the main structure, with patterns created in a pixel-like arrangement. Using two to four primary colors, combined with gradation and variations in bead finishes, enhanced the visual dimension of the products. Small-scale pieces required finer beads and denser patterns, while medium- to large-sized items benefited from reduced pattern density and clearer motifs visible from a distance. The findings confirm that bead-weaving can be adapted into souvenirs that are not only visually appealing and durable but also reflect local identity. Communities can apply this knowledge to generate income and promote cultural heritage through locally crafted souvenirs.
