This essay explores the perception of time in architecture through four primary dimensions: cultural time, cosmic time, biological time, and experiential time. By using Katsura Imperial Villa as a case study, the essay emphasizes how each dimension reveals different interpretations of time in societies through architecture. Cultural time emphasizes the significance of history and tradition in design, while cosmic time influences the building's orientation. Biological time links the life cycle with architecture, and experiential time considers the perception of time in the built environment. Katsura Imperial Villa, with its sensitive design to these temporal dimensions, offers new perspectives on the relationship between time and architecture, demonstrating the changing design approaches in response to society's evolving needs and values. The essay highlights the importance of considering temporal dimensions in architectural design to reflect cultural meaning and user experience, with technology and social changes as influential factors.
