Abstract

This study aimed to examine the level of knowledge and understanding among experts regarding fire scene investigation, and to analyze the relationship between personal factors and their levels of knowledge and understanding. A quantitative research methodology was employed. The sample group consisted of 30 forensic police officers responsible for crime scene investigation across 4 provinces in the lower northern region. All participants possessed specialized knowledge and a minimum of 2 years of work experience in crime scene investigation, including hands-on experience in evidence collection and scene processing. Data gathered from questionnaires were analyzed using statistical methods. The research findings revealed that the majority of the investigators were male, aged between 30 and 40 years, and held a bachelor's degree. In terms of rank, most were Police Non-Commissioned Officers (Pol. Constable to Pol. Sergeant), or held the rank of Police Sub-Lieutenant, serving in the position of on-duty crime scene investigators. Their monthly salary, including special allowances, ranged from 20,001 to 30,000 Baht. Most had less than 5 years of work experience and had attended training courses related to crime scene investigation or forensic science within the past 2 years. Regarding their expertise, the participants demonstrated a 'very good' level of knowledge and understanding of fire scene investigation. Their proficiency in conducting fire scene investigations to support legal inquiries was rated between 'very good' and 'excellent'. However, with respect to applying multidisciplinary knowledge to formulate investigative conclusions at fire scenes, the study highlights the critical importance of organizing specialized fire scene investigation training for all relevant personnel. Finally, this research proposes guidelines for enhancing the efficiency of scene investigators to foster professional advancement in the field of crime scene investigation.
