Abstract

The 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) gel is intracanal medications that highly effective in treating bacteria infections but it is not currently available in Thailand. This study aimed to evaluate the physical properties and shelf life of 2% CHX gel, newly developed at the Faculty of Dentistry, Srinakharinwirot University, under different storage temperatures. The 2% CHX gel was placed into 150 syringes and stored at refrigerated temperature (2-8 °C) and room temperature (23-35 °C). Clarity was assessed by measuring the mean optical density (OD), and viscosity was assessed by measuring the mean maximum force. Tests were performed at intervals of 2 and 4 weeks, and 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months (n=5 per time point), and compared to a control group (n=5) assessed immediately after preparation. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results showed that there were no significant differences were observed in OD or maximum force of the 2% CHX gel at any time point, whether stored at 2-8 °C or 23-35 °C, compared with the control group (p>0.05). Overall, the researchers concluded that the newly developed 2% CHX gel retained stable physical properties when stored at both refrigerated and room temperatures for up to 12 months.
