Abstract

Jiangnan Sizhu is a traditional instrumental ensemble of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai and a cultural form shaped by instrument making, ensemble practice, regional life, and Jiangnan aesthetics. Existing studies focus mainly on music history, performance, and intangible cultural heritage protection, while the translation of instrument-related cultural features into contemporary design knowledge remains limited. Using literature review, systematic analysis of representative instruments, and supplementary field observation, this study examines Jiangnan Sizhu instruments through cultural gene theory, semiotics, and aesthetic translation theory. The findings identify five categories of design-translatable aesthetic elements: visual, material, auditory, behavioral, and cultural-imagery elements. These elements convey qualities such as elegance, subtlety, naturalness, flow, balance, and collaboration, and support a pathway from historical-cultural context and cultural genes to contemporary design elements.
