THE INFLUENCE OF ONLINE TEACHING BEHAVIORS ON PERCEIVED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COURSE SATISFACTION AMONG CULTURALLY DIVERSE TESOL STUDENTS

Abstract

This study examined the influence of Online Teaching Behaviors (OTB) on Perceived Learning Outcomes (PLO) and Course Satisfaction (CS) among culturally diverse TESOL students. A quantitative research design was employed involving 192 TESOL students from Thongsook College, Bangkok, Thailand and participants in international online TESOL conferences. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire measuring Online Teaching Behaviors, Perceived Learning Outcomes, and Course Satisfaction. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), with bootstrapping of 5,000 resamples for hypothesis testing. The results showed that Online Teaching Behaviors had significant positive effects on Perceived Learning Outcomes (β = 0.642, p < .001) and Course Satisfaction (β = 0.248, p < .001). Perceived Learning Outcomes also had a significant positive effect on Course Satisfaction (β = 0.501, p < .001). Furthermore, Perceived Learning Outcomes partially mediated the relationship between Online Teaching Behaviors and Course Satisfaction (β = 0.322, p < .001). The model explained 41.2% of the variance in Perceived Learning Outcomes and 57.4% of the variance in Course Satisfaction. These findings indicate that communication, interaction, feedback, teacher presence, enthusiasm, organization, and learner support are important components of online TESOL instruction. Such teaching behaviors may support language interaction, motivation, perceived learning, and course satisfaction. Although participants represented diverse national and cultural backgrounds, cultural differences were not directly compared. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of interactive and supportive online teaching practices in enhancing Perceived Learning Outcomes and Course Satisfaction among the participants in this study.
