THE EFFECT OF QUALITY OF WORK LIFE ON WORK PERFORMANCE OF PERSONNEL: A CASE STUDY OF THE PASSENGER TRANSPORT BUREAU, DEPARTMENT OF LAND TRANSPORT
Abstract
This research, entitled Quality of Work Life Affecting Work Performance of Personnel: A Case Study of the Passenger Transport Bureau, Department of Land Transport, aimed to 1) examine the level of quality of work life of personnel at the Passenger Transport Bureau, 2) examine the level of work performance of personnel at the Passenger Transport Bureau, 3) compare work performance classified by personal factors, and 4) investigate the quality of work life affecting work performance of personnel at the Passenger Transport Bureau. This study employed a quantitative research design. The sample consisted of 96 personnel of the Passenger Transport Bureau, Department of Land Transport. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The statistical methods used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. The research findings revealed that 1) the overall quality of work life of personnel at the Passenger Transport Bureau was at the highest level; 2) the overall work performance of personnel was also at the highest level; 3) personnel with different position levels, position types, family responsibilities or dependents, and experience in public service had significantly different work performance at the .05 level, whereas personnel with different gender, age, marital status, educational level, length of government service, and income level did not have significantly different work performance at the .05 level; and 4) among the dimensions of quality of work life, the work environment was the only variable that positively affected work performance at the .05 level. Meanwhile, appropriate compensation and benefits, career security and advancement, relationships with supervisors and colleagues, work-life balance, and job satisfaction did not significantly affect work performance when considered together in the multiple regression model. The findings of this study highlight the importance of improving the quality of work life, particularly the work environment. A safe, appropriate, and supportive work environment, including adequate tools, equipment, work systems, and a positive workplace atmosphere, is directly associated with enhancing personnel work performance. The results can be used as guidelines for improving human resource management, allocating work-related resources, developing work support systems, and enhancing the quality of public service delivery at the Passenger Transport Bureau, Department of Land Transport.
