Motifs and Styles of Lao Krang's Native Textile

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study the characteristics of motifs, styles and colors of Lao Krang textile. The sample consisted of 10 Lao Krang people who lived in Noen Kham District, Chai Nat Province and Ban Rai District, Uthai Thani Province. Data were collected by interviewing and audio and video recording, Data was analyzed using qualitative analysis.

The research finding revealed that the motifs of Lao Krang textile had three weaving techniques Chok, Ikat and Khit. The most of motifs got the inspiration from everyday life, belief and imagination. Chok motifs were the natural motifs which were karb motifs, animal motifs, plant and flower motifs, and the appliance motifs. Ikat motifs were animal motifs and appliance motifs. Khit motif was Plu Maak Waai. The styles of Lao Krang textile were costumes and home textiles. The costumes were Pha Sin consisted of Hua Sin, Tua Sin and Tin Sin. The identity of Tua Sin was ikat and Tin Sin was chok. Others were vest and Jup Mor shirt. Clothes sewed by hand with flat-felled seam and decorated seam by outline stitch and blanket stitch with red thread dyed from Khang. The home textiles were Mon Khwan, Mon Na Wuaor or Mon Thao, Mon Hok, blankets, bed sheets and Pha Na Mung which made of khit and chok. Each home textile styles had specially placement of motif. Most of home textiles were used in auspicious ceremony such as wedding and the motifs had meaning in successful of family life. Six colors were used for weaving to create motifs which were red, red-orange, green, yellow, black and white.
