CONTEMPLATIVE EDUCATION AND ENHANCEMENT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN ADOLESCENTS
Keywords:
Contemplative Education, Emotional Intelligence, AdolescentsAbstract
Contemplative education is an approach that focuses on developing inner awareness and wisdom, which is essential for enhancing emotional intelligence in adolescents. Adolescents' emotions are highly sensitive to the influence of others and are often affected by social pressures. They may begin to express their emotions more noticeably or intensely, especially when feeling dissatisfied. This can manifest in aggressive behavior or mood swings, leading to conflicts with parents or peers. One contributing factor to these emotional fluctuations is hormonal changes in the body. However, emotional changes in adolescence are natural and can be managed by learning how to regulate and express emotions in a mature manner.
The six principles of contemplative education that promote emotional intelligence in adolescents include. 1) Mindful Reflection Training adolescents to observe and reflect on their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in a mindful way helps them gain deeper self-understanding. 2) Interconnectedness Encouraging adolescents to recognize the connections between themselves, others, and their surroundings fosters empathy and understanding. 3) Deep Listening Teaching adolescents to listen attentively and with care enables them to better understand the feelings and thoughts of others. 4) Seeing Things as They Are Promoting a realistic and unbiased view of the world helps adolescents develop a more accurate understanding of life. 5) Learning Community Creating an environment conducive to learning and experience-sharing supports continuous personal growth. And 6) Reflective Thinking Encouraging adolescents to review and reflect on past experiences helps them learn and grow from their experiences.
The five components of emotional intelligence in adolescents include. 1) Self-Awareness The ability to recognize one's own emotions, thoughts, and needs. 2) Emotional Regulation The ability to manage and control one's emotions appropriately. 3) Empathy The ability to perceive, understand, and empathize with the emotions of others. 4) Relationship Management The ability to build and maintain positive relationships with others. And 5) Self-Motivation The ability to set and pursue goals with perseverance and determination.
