The concept of transparency in design architecture

Abstract

Based on the concept of transparency, Slutzky and Rowe divided transparency into two categories. The first is Literal Transparency, which refers to the ability to see through objects due to the properties of materials, walls, and surfaces. The second is Phenomenal Transparency, which is perceived indirectly through the senses and evokes feelings related to architecture, such as overlapping spaces, interpenetration, and stratification. Therefore, both forms of transparency can be incorporated into modern architecture.

By applying the concept of transparency, the future of museum designs can be enhanced. For example, shallow spaces can be designed, along with transparent spaces positioned in front of deeper spaces and the strategic layout of rooms between the interior and exterior of the building. Therefore, architectural designs based on the concept of transparency can be applied to museum designs, creating a novel visual experience for visitors and potentially altering their perception from the ordinary. This approach may attract more visitors to newly designed museums in the future.
