Designing Chatbot-Assisted Instruction Integrated with Problem-Based Learning to Enhance Algorithm Design Skills among Grade 8 Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purposes of this research were: 1) to design the use of a instructional chatbot integrated with problem-based learning in order to enhance algorithm design skills of Grade 8 students, and 2) to investigate the effects of using a instructional chatbot integrated with problem-based learning on the algorithm design skills of Grade 8 students. The sample consisted of 60 Grade 8 students from Wangnuea Wittaya School, Lampang Province, selected through purposive sampling. The students were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 30 students in each group. The experimental group was instructed using a instructional chatbot integrated with problem-based learning, while the control group received conventional instruction. The research instruments included a chatbot-assisted learning system, lesson plans, an algorithm design knowledge test, and an algorithm design skills assessment form. Data were analyzed using basic statistical methods, including mean, standard deviation, and an independent samples t-test.
The research findings revealed that: 1) the instructional chatbot designed based on the ADDIE Model, together with the problem-based learning lesson plans integrating the chatbot in Step 3 (investigation and inquiry process), was evaluated as having high quality and appropriateness; and 2) The results showed no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups at the .05 level. However, students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher algorithm design skills than those in the control group in the areas of problem analysis and debugging and testing at the .05 level. These findings suggest that the integration of an instructional chatbot with problem-based learning can appropriately enhance certain thinking process skills related to algorithm design.
