Abstract

This article examines the challenges and adaptation strategies of Thai family businesses under conditions of structural volatility arising from global economic shifts, digital transformation, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions. Such volatility is not merely cyclical in nature but represents profound structural change that significantly affects business models, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability. Family businesses, which constitute the backbone of the Thai economy in terms of employment and value creation, are particularly vulnerable to these structural transformations. Using an integrative literature review and conceptual analysis, the article explores the distinctive characteristics of family businesses, their structural vulnerabilities, and their adaptive mechanisms in contexts of uncertainty. The findings suggest that the close interconnection between family, ownership, and management constitutes both a strategic advantage and a structural constraint, especially regarding succession planning, internal conflicts, and decision-making processes that rely heavily on individuals rather than formal systems. The analysis further indicates that Thai family businesses capable of effectively navigating structural volatility tend to adopt strategies focused on professionalization, clear separation between family and organizational roles, investment in innovation and digital transformation, and the strengthening of governance mechanisms while preserving organizational identity and core values. These strategies enhance organizational resilience and dynamic capabilities, enabling firms to respond more effectively to long-term uncertainty. From a policy perspective, the article argues that strengthening the resilience and sustainability of Thai family businesses requires public policies and institutional frameworks that acknowledge their structural complexity and provide targeted support for succession planning, capability development, and risk management. Integrating structural, governance, and adaptive perspectives is essential for enabling Thai family businesses to remain competitive and sustainable in an increasingly volatile global economic environment.
