Values of Buddha Image Creating in the Lanna Manuscripts

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the virtues of the creation of Buddha images in the Lanna palm leave manuscripts. By studying from the manuscript on the virtues of creating Buddha statues, Ban Klang Temple edition, Yuwa Sub-district, San Pa Tong District, Chiangmai Province. The results of the study can be summarized as follows.

Palm leaves manuscripts about the virtues of creation of Buddha statues, Ban Klang Temple edition Inscribed by Noi Apichai in 1926, in Lanna letter. There is a total of 1 tie, 14 pages. Decorated in a customary manner, that is, picking up Pali vocabulary and translating it into Lanna language, word by word, until the end of the story. This manuscript divided into 4 parts; the phrase, introduction, story, and conclusion.

Virtues of creating Buddha statues can be divided into 4 groups: 1) virtues according to the number of Kappa that will be received, 2) virtues according to the nature that will be received in other worlds, 3) other virtues, and 4) other knowledge such as counting the lifespan of kappa, etc. In addition, creation Buddha images will have more or less merit depending on the materials used to make them, such as leaves, wood, cloth, clay, stone, brass, lead, gold, silver, gems, etc. The virtues will start from materials with low value to materials with high value.
