Developing an Integrated Model to Foster Trust and Peaceful Coexistence in a Multicultural Society: A Case Study of Thailand’s Southern Border Provinces
Keywords:

This study aims to: 1) examine the situation and factors influencing the level of trust and peaceful coexistence in multicultural communities; 2) analyze key mechanisms, models, and practices that contribute to trust-building; and
3) develop an integrated model to enhance trust and sustainable peace. The research adopts a qualitative approach, integrating participatory research and action research. A total of 35 key informants including community leaders, religious leaders, government representatives, civil society actors, and local residents in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat provinces were purposively selected. Data were collected through document analysis, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participatory workshops, and analyzed using content analysis, coding, categorization, and conceptual synthesis, with triangulation employed to ensure reliability.
The findings reveal that trust in the study area is characterized as fragile trust, shaped by three interconnected levels: structural, social, and cultural. Key mechanisms for fostering trust include communication and safe spaces, leadership roles, social networks, and public participation. These mechanisms are operationalized through intercultural dialogue platforms, community-based collaborative activities, and institutional partnerships. The study proposes a Trust-Based Integrative Peace Model (TIP Model), which links structural, social, and cultural dimensions through four core components: trust-building, deep participation, intercultural understanding, and collaborative governance. The model operates as a dynamic cycle, emphasizing that trust functions as a systemic mechanism driving sustainable peaceful coexistence in multicultural societies, with practical implications for both policy and implementation.
