Integrating Green Tourism and Wellness Tourism through a Community-Based Approach: Perspectives of Tourists and Local Residents in Bang Kachao, Samut Prakan

Abstract

This study aimed to (1) examine the factors attracting tourists to visit the Bang Kachao community in Samut Prakan Province, (2) investigate the factors contributing to the conservation of nature-based green areas, and (3) explore the factors promoting wellness tourism in the area. A qualitative research design was employed. The population comprised two groups: Thai tourists aged 25 years and above who had visited Bang Kachao at least twice and participated in health-related activities, and local residents who had lived in the community for no less than five years. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using content analysis.

The findings indicated that (1) key attraction factors included the natural environment and the image of Bang Kachao as the “Green Lung of Bangkok,” diverse tourism activities, convenient accessibility, and the friendliness of local residents; (2) factors supporting the conservation of green areas consisted of green energy campaigns, environmental education and nature-based learning, and appropriate control of construction; and (3) factors promoting wellness tourism included green spaces conducive to mental well-being, health-promoting activities, local healthy food and wellness products, and a peaceful atmosphere that facilitates physical and mental restoration. The study highlights an integrative approach that combines green tourism with wellness tourism through a community-based model, which can serve as a framework for strengthening destination image and enhancing sustainable tourism management in Bang Kachao through collaboration among the community and relevant stakeholders.
