Development of Waste Management Processes in Durian Orchards of Farmers in Chanthaburi Province

Abstract

This research has the following objectives: (1) study the current waste management practices in durian orchards in Chanthaburi Province, (2) develop an improved waste management process, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of the developed process. The study employed qualitative research combined with participatory action research, collecting field data from 12 sites across 4 representative communities in 4 districts. The sample consisted of 20 participants, including durian orchard farmers and local administrative officers. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and observations. Data were analyzed using content analysis.

The findings are as follows: 1) The study on the current state of waste management in durian orchards in Chanthaburi Province revealed that most waste consists of fallen durians, undersized fruits, and substandard produce. Farmers primarily manage this waste by burying it or leaving it in the orchards. Utilization of such waste remains limited due to a lack of knowledge, equipment, and motivation. These practices have resulted in sanitation issues, environmental degradation, and economic loss. 2) A three-step waste management process was developed: 1) On-site management by promoting knowledge, encouraging waste separation, and integrating collaboration at the local level; 2) Efficient collection and transportation through the establishment of collection centers and development of appropriate transport systems; 3) Utilization and value addition through processing into community products, biofertilizers, and connecting to niche markets. 3) The evaluation indicated that communities were able to manage durian waste systematically, leading to increased income, reduced waste, and promotion of a circular economy at the local level in a sustainable manner.
