Fostering Environmental Awareness through Scout Activities in the Context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Abstract

This article aims to synthesize approaches for fostering environmental awareness through scouting activities by applying the contextual framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The analysis draws upon a review of credible sources, including research studies, academic publications, and documents from the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the United Nations. The synthesis reveals that scouting, as a form of non-formal education, serves as a powerful tool for instilling environmental knowledge, attitudes, and values in youth. These align with the principles of education for sustainable development (ESD). Environmental conservation is a core component of the Scout ideology, as reflected in the Scouts' motto to "leave the world a little better than you found it," which resonates strongly with the goals of sustainability. The findings confirm that scouting activities contribute to nurturing responsible and environmentally conscious citizens who are instrumental in achieving the global SDGs. Strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of scouting in promoting environmental awareness include developing curricula and activity frameworks aligned with the SDGs, training scout leaders in environmental education, and building cross-sector partnerships to support the long-term sustainability of such initiatives.
