An Analysis of Enlightenment of Phra Angulimālya Thera

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present and analyze the attainment of Dhamma by Angulimāla Thera. The results of the study found that Enlightenment is an intellectual development until being able to enlighten the Four Noble Truths by following the Threefold Learning Doctrines in the middle of the path, Samatha or Vipassana with the principle that leads to nirvana Magga 8. Each has its perfection and practicing one of which leads to enlightenment in four levels: Sotāpatti-phala, Sakadāgāmi-phala, Anāgāmi-phala, Arahatta-phala, leading to attainment of nirvana and becoming the noble one in Buddhism. Factors affecting the attainment of Angulimālya: having the opportunity to meet the Buddha to listen to the Dhamma and practice the precepts is the important factors in Angulimālya’s attainment. It was on this occasion that he came to understand his misfortune that turned his life around from being a good person to becoming a murderer because he was deceived by teachers and fellow students. When he met the Buddha which is a good friend to teach him until he attained the highest level of enlightenment, Arahant. This is a motto for a person who has been mistaken. When one committed an offense, one can turn into a good person.
