Problem-based learning Management to Develop Historical Thinking through the Study of Key Figures in Thai History
Main Article Content
Abstract
This academic article aimed to present a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach designed to foster historical thinking skills among senior high school students, utilizing the analysis of key figures in Thai history as case studies. The article employed a documentary research method, examining concepts, theories, and academic literature related to PBL and historical thinking; these were then analyzed and synthesized to develop guidelines for organizing learning activities. Studying key historical figures should extend beyond the mere memorization of biographies and achievements; instead, it should encourage students to explore the social contexts and events of the era, the factors influencing the figures' roles and decisions, and the resulting societal impacts. Consequently, examining evidence from diverse sources was crucial for enabling students to gain a more comprehensive perspective on these individuals. The proposed learning approach consisted of five steps: 1) defining a historical problem, 2) information gathering, 3) analyzing evidence, 4) discussing and exchanging perspectives, and 5) synthesizing knowledge. The learning process began with an issue that sparked curiosity about a significant historical figure. Students then searched for information from various sources, verified the origins and credibility of the data, compared similarities and differences, and discussed their findings. Throughout this process, the teacher posed questions, suggested information sources, and guided students in carefully examining the evidence. This approach enabled students to go beyond merely learning the biographies and achievements of significant Thai historical figures; it encouraged them to think critically about the subject matter—considering, for instance, why a figure made a particular decision, the influence of the events and social conditions of the time, the consistency of information across different sources, and the subsequent impact on society. Consequently, students practiced formulating questions, gathering evidence, analyzing and interpreting data, and articulating their own opinions supported by evidence and reasoning, all of which were key characteristics of historical thinking.
